Web first, app later

I love mobile. I run a mobile dev community. But web wins — and here's why we tell every founder that.

I 💚 mobile. I 💚 mobile dev. I even run a mobile dev community. But web >>> mobile, and you can't change my mind. 😤

Not because you have to beg Apple and the Play Store to launch. Not because you might write code for two platforms.

Because as a founder, it's insanely hard to make a user install an entire app — and easy to make them click a link. A link asks for zero commitment. An app asks for trust, storage, updates, permissions and your data.

On the web you can break things, fix them the same night, break again and push again. Most ideas can be built for the web; 90% of the time you won't need a mobile app.

If you can't get a user to click a link, you definitely can't get them to install.
  • Build where friction is low.
  • Build where sharing is natural.
  • Build where one link can change everything.

Web first. App later. Users >>> platforms. It's the first thing we tell our clients: go where your users are and grow — or die trying to bring them to you.
